CALENDAR
OF NASA WEBCASTS
Interactive
Webcasts: NASA field team participants will be:
"NASA
Mike" Comberiate, Team Lleader and Rocket Scientist
Dr. Kathryn Clark, NASA Chief Scientist for Human Development and
Exploration of Space
Ken Anderson, NASA EOS-Aqua Instrument Manager
Dr. Gunther Kleteschka, Geologist
Andre Fortin and Kevin Ballou, NASA Engineers for software
and communications
Christopher Morris, NASA Logistics Chief
4/21 from
TBD site in Resolute Bay. Audience will include GSFC Visitor Center,
Maryland and Longway Planetarium, Flint MI. Viewers and the NASA field
team will download satellite images from our website and discuss how NASA
is using remote sensing to studying the Earth Processes involved in the
global climate. Will also review the weather images from NOAA and DMSP
satellites and discuss them in terms of the logistics involved in the
trip to the Pole. Will also review satellite images from Landsat, Terra
and IceSat of the area and how scientists are using those data to understand
the environment. Various types of satellite imagery will be discussed
showing the wide range of data products that scientists are deriving from
the Earth Observing System missions already on-orbit.
4/23 from
Eureka Weather Station. This will be a special Distance Learning Session
with three schools in the USA, covering topics from their Earth Science
curricula on the Cryosphere. The schools will be Northwest HS in Maryland,
Red Cloud HS in South Dakota, and Indian Valley MS in Pennsylvania. Again
satellite imagery from the MODIS instrument on Terra and very high resolution
images of RB and Eureka from Landsat-7 will be made available via the
website for discussions.
4/24 (or
4/25 if weather prevents traveling to the Pole on 4/24) from North Pole.
Dr. Kathryn Clark, Chief NASA scientist for all Life Science programs,
will interview 12 women skiers from "WomenQuest", who have just
reached the Pole after a hazardous two-week trek. Senator Stabenow of
Michigan may participate in the live interactive interview because of
the team's connection to Michigan State University and its online educational
component to inspire girls and young women in learning math and science.
4/26 from
the Haughton Crater. This is the site of a NASA's Mars Analog training
facility for the eventual habitation of the planet Mars. The Field team
will be on the site and will hold an interactive webcast with the Director
of the project, Dr. Pascal Lee, while he is at NASA Ames in California.
Again the topic will focus on the Life Science issues involved in this
project. It will also include a discussion of the local geology, and high
resolution Landsat images will be available for viewers to download.
4/27 from
the K-12 school in Resolute Bay. This will be a special Life Science
Lecture to Western Reserve Academy in Ohio, by Dr. Clark on NASA's manned
missions. Students from the Qarmartalik High School will be actively involved
in a question/answer session following the lecture. Active audience participation
is encouraged.
4/29 from
Ice Station Borneo. This is a contingency opportunity for Polar Trek
only if all else fails.
Following
the return of the field team, edited video segments will be produced that
may be downloaded from the website, which will include the scenes of the
arctic sea ice obtained during our low-altitude flights from 75 N to the
Pole. Prior to these webcasts, satellite images and videos from earlier
missions in the area will be made available so the students participating
in the distance-learning sessions can better understand the environment
and prepare intelligent questions on the subjects to be discussed.
